There are several kinds of legal services provided by and/or targeted to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

That is:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services (ATSILS)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Legal Services
Family Violence Prevention Legal Services (FVPLS)

ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER LEGAL SERVICES

These are indigenous organisations that provide legal aid in a culturally appropriate way. There is a full list of these services with phone contacts on the the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department web site. Take this link.

FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION LEGAL SERVICES (FVPLS)

Family Violence Prevention Legal Services are community based organisations that provide legal assistance and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of family violence.

At January 2005 there are 13 FVPLS. The contact details for these services is on the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department web site. Take this link. Additionally, information about services provided and the areas covered is available from the National Network of Indigenous Women's Legal Services.

On 7th January 2005, the Attorney-General announced that a further 13 FVPLS would be established. Take this link to the press release.
