Enhancing Family Functioning:From Research to Practice

The University of Queensland Family Centre invites practitioners, community groups and academics to attend our 2002 conference. The aim of this conference is to bridge the gap between academic research and community life. This conference will encourage discourse between academics and practitioners and provide up to date research findings to people who work with children and families.

This conference will also provide a platform for community and government organizations to disseminate information about their programs. By submitting a poster you can inform others about your projects and encourage cross-disciplinary discussion. Two poster presentation sessions will be held each day.

The venue for the conference is Lennons Country Comfort Hotel located in the heart of theBrisbane CBD. Delegates will be able to enjoy Brisbane?s subtropical climate in air-conditioned comfort. The hotel is in the main shopping mall a short distance from the Brisbane River and Southbank Parklands.

Keynote speakers:

Professor John Dewar.
Professor Dewar is a specialist in Family Law and is the Director of the Socio-Legal Centre at Griffith University.

Robin Sullivan
Queensland?s Children?s Commissioner

Other speakers include:
Professor Pat Noller and Dr Judith Feeney, world reknowned researchers in family studies and attachment theory,

Dr Monica Cuskelly who is an expert in the area of disability and sibling relationships and

Dr Yvonne Darlington who has a strong social work practice background and is an expert on research in the area of child protection.

Conference Themes

The conference will focus on a range of topics that impact on family processes. Papers on the following topics have already been selected for presentation:
- Communication in violent relationships.
- Competition and comparison between siblings.
- Postnatal depression.
- Sibling relationships and parental divorce.

Who should consider presenting?

- Researchers
- Academics/Educators
- Community groups
- Government organisations
- Anyone who has important information about a family orientated program or research project that they would like to disseminate to the wider community.

Closing date for submission of abstract is 30th September 2001.

If you are not sure if your project is suitable for a poster presentation please contact Jill Armstrong at the Family Centre for further information.

Presentation Guidelines
- Abstracts for papers and posters should not exceed 300 words.

- Title, author and name of organization should be clearly presented at the top of the page.
- The abstract should clearly describe the topic and content to be included in the presentation.
- Papers should not exceed fifteen minutes plus five minute question time.
- Posters 1m x 1m.
