RESILIENT WORKERS SUPPORTING RESILIENT SURVIVORS
About the theme:
'Resilient workers supporting resilient survivors' aims to raise awareness of strategies that can be utilised to support both workers and victims of crime. It is also expected the theme will spark debate regarding the ability for victims of crime (and even workers) to be resilient throughout the criminal justice process.
The conference will be a launching pad for debate and reform in the treatment of victims of crime in Queensland. The conference will work toward outcomes that enhance the recovery of victims of crime and the reparation of damage caused by criminal acts.
Conference Goal:
To raise awareness of issues that impact upon victims of crime and establish strategies to minimise or prevent harm caused by criminal behaviour.
Conference Objectives:
1. Develop strategies to create resilient organisations, workers and victims of crime.
2. To raise awareness of issues that adversely impact upon victims of crime.
3. Raise the awareness of the need for prevention strategies to stop violence and abuse in the community.
4. To change attitudes in the community regarding crime victimisation.
5. To enhance the ability of victims of crime to recover from the crime victimisation.
6. To examine how organisations can better support workers who support victims of crime.
7. Provide practical skills in treatment and support for victims of crime.
8. Provide information to Government on policy directions to support victims of crime.
Abstracts:
Synopsis for papers, symposiums, workshops, poster or video presentations are to be submitted to the Victims of Crime Association of Queensland by Friday 11 January 2002. Persons submitting papers should note that the association is not in a position to provide financial support to presenters at the conference, however conference fees will be waived.
Definitions:
Paper: A submitted paper to which the presenter will speak for a period of thirty minutes with up to ten minutes allowed for questions. A double session may also be available. The full paper must be forwarded to the association 30 days prior to the commencement of the conference.
Symposium: Small group presentation, 3 to 4 persons speaking 5 to 10 minutes each followed by discussion. Total time forty minutes. A double session may also be available.
Posters: A static display of posters, diagrams, and text of research and or resources. Ideally handouts will be available.
Video: Screening of video with discussion, ideally handouts and flyers will be available.
Criteria for selection of abstract:
The presentation should meet the following criteria:
* Relevance to the conference theme and victims of crime
* Reflect the objectives of the conference
* Contribute to knowledge base
* Be innovative
* Soundness of approach and clarity of outcome or achievement
* Significance for improving programs and policy
The association reserves the right to request suitability checks of presenters which may include references or criminal history checks. These will only be undertaken with the authority of the presenter and payment of the applicable fee.
Format of abstract
The submission form must be completed and returned with the abstract. The abstract should be arranged as follows:
* Sentence stating the purpose of the paper/workshop
* Brief Description of the paper/workshop
* Summary of argument or findings
* Statement of conclusion reached
* Time required to present paper/workshop
The abstract must not exceed two hundred and fifty words. Abbreviations must be avoided.
