6th Working for Common Wealth International Conference

Date: 20 May 2002 through 24 May 2002
Author: Commonwealth Association of Local Action and Economic Development (COMMACT)

The 6th COMMACT Working for Commonwealth International Conference (6WCW) will be an Action Summit for approximately 350 practitioners and policy makers involved in Local Economic Development, Community Business Partnerships and Community Development from right across the Commonwealth of Nations.

COMMACT expects delegates to attend from most Commonwealth Countries - particularly from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Region, Asia, Africa, Canada and the Caribbean, and from the United Kingdom.

6WCW has been designed to strengthen the capacity of participating organisations and individuals to work together across national boundaries and within communities to achieve social and economic change.

The Conference will include four major sub-themes:

1. International Networking - Creating Partnerships and Peoples' Movements in the face of Globalisation;

2. Using the Technological Revolution to improve communications, share actions and build movements;

3. Creating, Using and Tapping into Grass Roots Social Capital;

4. Exerting Influence on Global and Commonwealth Institutions.

Each theme area will include an interactive action/reflection process built around:

* Examining existing examples of effective grass roots actions and peoples' movements;
* Reflecting on existing and past efforts and building ideas, theory and values for future cooperative action;
* Exploring the potential for new forms of local and international co-operation for People-Centred Development; and
* Identifying and developing concrete Action Proposals and Projects for the future
