International Women's DayDate: 08 March 2002Author: Office of the Status of Women
March 8 is International Women's Day (IWD) every year. It has been celebrated in Australia for the past 73 years. Its origins began around the same time as the Labour Day holiday although IWD is not a public holiday in Australia. IWD is an occasion women and men join together and call for a better world for women and girls and celebrate their contribution to society. IWD activities include meetings, marches, campaigns, debates, speeches, picnics, breakfasts, lunches and dinners. IWD is about participation.
