Current Issues in Regulation: Enforcement and Compliance

The Australian Institute of Criminology, in collaboration with the Regulatory Institutions Network, Australian National University and the Division of Business and Enterprise, University of South Australia, is hosting a conference addressing the role that regulation plays in promoting the wellbeing and safety of the community and its effectiveness in preventing illegal practices. The conference aims to explore strategies, processes, legislation, compliance and enforcement techniques in areas
such as trade practices, consumer protection, occupational health and safety, professional regulation and the environment.

Conference Themes
The conference will be organised around the following themes:

Current issues in regulatory enforcement
Enforcement policies and strategies
Empirical studies in regulatory enforcement, including ineffective enforcement
Issues in regulatory compliance
Compliance programs
Regulatory failure

Key Speakers
Keynote speakers will include:

1. Professor Allan Fels AO, Chairman, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission
2. Professor John Braithwaite, Chair, Regulatory Institutions Network (Regnet), ANU

Conference Papers
The conference program will include papers by invited key-note speakers, other invited speakers, and selected papers from interested persons in plenary and concurrent sessions.

If you are interested in presenting a paper, please send the following information to the address below by 8 March 2002:

A brief abstract (approximately 150 words)
A personal profile (two paragraphs)
Details of some papers you have presented in the past (ie paper title, where it was presented and date of presentation)
Contact details, including full mailing address and if possible an email address

It should be noted that if your submission is successful, no assistance to defray travel, registration or accommodation expenses will be available.
