Making Links - Crossing Borders

Date: 09 December 2002
Author: Legal Intersections Research Centre

20th Annual Law Society Conference

The Legal Intersections Research Centre is a research unit of the University of Wollongong, affiliated with the Faculty of Law. Building on existing research strengths and activities amongst staff of the Faculty of Law, the Legal Intersections Research Centre was established in 2001 to coordinate, encourage and undertake research that explores various dimensions of the theme of legal intersectionality. Its establishment reflects an appreciation that significant developments in legal scholarship have emerged, and will continue to emerge, from research which involves the crossing of boundaries, including the boundaries between:

law and other academic disciplines (including history, philosophy, economics and psychology);

state and national jurisdictions;

adversarial and negotiated modes of dispute resolution;

what law 'is' and how law operates (theory and practice)

The Legal Intersections Research Centre recognises that these types of intersectional legal research and scholarship provide opportunities for illumination of the nature of law as a regulatory mechanism, as well as for enhanced understanding of the operation of the law in specific contexts. The Centre supports individual and group research across a diverse range of law-related fields. It aims to enhance opportunities for collaborative multi-disciplinary research projects.
