NSW Women's Gathering 2002

Date: 27 September 2002 through 29 September 2002

2002 is the Year of the Outback and Bourke is this year's venue for the NSW - Women's Gathering. Gatherings have taken place since 1993 in country centres and are a great opportunity to meet with other women, share views and ideas and enhance personal and community wellbeing.

~ Theme ~

This year's theme is "Fortitude and Far Horizons - Strength in face of adversity and the ability to see beyond the immediate future". The theme recognizes that throughout the bush, women have for many years been the glue that holds that society together - the quiet strength that 'keeps the show on the road'. Quiet fortitude in the face of drought, flood and tragedy, lateral thinking in times of adversity, ability to mend and make do when
money is tight - these are strengths not solely the preserve of women but they are recurrent themes throughout the history of our country's growth and development. One way that women survive the vicissitudes of life and
constantly replenish the strength of their families is by drawing on each other. A group of bush women seen talking at a playgroup session, clearing sale or field day are not just gossiping - they are supporting each other, exchanging ideas and networking.

The "far horizons" that can isolate these women are the only boundary that they have. Over the horizon can come unlimited opportunity or disaster; women have learned to watch for the signs; the promising storm cloud, the spiral of dust announcing the mail-truck or visitor and the frightening plumes of smoke that carry word of destruction and terror. Wise women watch the physical horizon for news of what's to come and they keep their eyes and ears tuned on the less tangible horizon as well. Modern technology,
financial opportunities, new ideas and new friendships also 'appear over the horizon'. The women of our Shire watch the horizon for changes in the weather, the political climate or impending domestic drama.
