Explaining the problems
It
is easy to see discrimination in many pieces of ACT legislation against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.
Try this:
Go to the ACT Legislation Register
http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/a/1929-18/default.asp
Use the search function on the site to search all ACT Legislation for
the terms 'de facto', 'spouse', 'family', 'relative', 'kin',
'parent' or 'guardian'. This will throw up a list of
legislation. Choose from the list and look at where the term appears in the legislation and
if or how these term is defined in
the legislation.
-
Does
the legislation discriminate?
-
If
so, what is the effect on the rights and/or responsibilities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people
in the ACT?
It
will help if you let others know about kinds of issues or problems that
you see.
Maybe you are good at preparing material to explain things or good at
speaking to groups. If you would like to help in this way, please let
us know.
Is
there more problem legislation?
You
could check through the list of ACT legislation that has been flagged
for consideration in the review.
The
motion passed by the ACT Legislative Assembly initiating the review notes
that legislation can discriminate in language or effect, including
directly, indirectly or by omission.
-
Is
there more problem legislation than that which is already listed for
review?
-
Is
there legislation that doesn't discriminate now, but should be changed
e.g. to make it clearer or for public education purposes?
If
you find that something is missing, you could let the
key Assembly members know and/or let us
know.
What
else needs to be done?
Most
of this web site is about reform of ACT legislation that currently
discriminates against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.
But, in the section More ACT Issues, some other things that might need to
be done are listed.
-
Is
the list in the section More ACT Issues
complete?
-
Assuming
that it isn't complete, what else needs to be done and who needs to do
it?
If
you see more things that need to be done, you could let the Key
Assembly Members know, contact the body or group that you think needs
to do something, or let us know.

Good
Process Group
The
ACT Good Process Group has been started by Liz Keogh and Judy Harrison.
We
agree that there needs to be reform in the ACT to overcome discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.
We
also agree with Ros Dundas, the Chief Minister and other Legislative
Assembly members that there needs to be Good Process.
Because
there is no information readily available for the community yet about the
changes that are underway, we decided to make a start.
We hope that organisations and individuals will help ensure that the ACT
distinguishes itself and that reform is achieved through inclusive,
constructive and respectful processes.
