About PIAC
Public Interest Advocacy Centre is an independent, non profit legal and policy centre which was established in Sydney in 1982. It strives to foster a fair, just and democratic society by empowering disadvantaged citizens, consumers and communities. We do this through strategic test case litigation, policy intervention and community education.The Centres work emphasises effective public access to information, participation in societys governance and accountability of the public, private and community sectors.
The services provided by PIAC include:
legal advice and representation in public interest litigation;
research, policy development and campaigning;
community legal education and advocacy skills training;
assessment and referral of cases through the Public Interest Law Clearing House - under which private law firms provide their services free of charge for public interest causes.Current priority areas of work for PIAC are health and community services, utilities reform, access to justice and the governmental system.
Being Sydney based, PIACs work tends to have aNSW focus. However, as the only such centre in Australia we take up issues of national significance and can act for people from all over the country.
