The Women’s Legal Services Network (WLSN) is a new network within the National Association of Community Legal Centres comprising the following services:
* Women’s Legal Services (Adelaide, Alice Springs, Brisbane, Canberra, Cairns, Darwin, Hobart, Katherine, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Townsville),* Indigenous Women’s Legal Services (Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Townsville),
* Domestic Violence Legal Services (Alice Springs, Darwin, Melbourne and Sydney) and
* Rural Women’s Outreach Workers (Dubbo, Lismore; Mildura, South Hedland, Toowoomba and Warrnambool).
Some of the agencies in the Network have been operating for over 15 years, others have been operating since 1996 following the expansion of Commonwealth funding for women’s legal services.Women's Legal Services between them have vast experience nationwide in advising and assisting women in relation to the law and the legal system. All the Women’s Legal Services collect data on the clients they assist and the types of matter in which they are seeking advice. From this we know that most of the many thousands of clients contacting these services every year have a range of legal problems, including family law, domestic violence, sex discrimination, employment, and access to legal aid.
For many women experiencing problems, a women’s legal service is their first and last resort for legal advice. Women’s Legal Services therefore not only play a vital role in legal service delivery, they are also a repository of considerable expertise in the law as it affects women and how it works on the ground.
The Network has an Executive Group to assist in ensuring effective communication and coordination of the work of all the services. This meets by regular phone hook-up.
All members of the WLSN share the objective of improving women’s access to justice. The purpose of the Network is to improve the effectiveness of our law reform work, and to ensure that our experience and expertise is made accessible to policy makers and politicians. The Network’s priorities for 1999 are family law property issues and women’s access to legal aid.
