Help for the Chat Sessions

On connecting to the Online Chat you will be presented with a window that contains 3 fields:

  • Nickname
  • Username and
  • Email

Simply enter a Nickname and and press the connect button. The chat session will then appear in front of you.

The chat session consists of three main windows. The large window, called the chat window contains the messages while the narrow left hand window contains a list of the participants Nicknames.

There is a bottom window. This is where you type your message. On pressing the enter key your message will appear in the chat window.

There are a number of menus options at the top of the chat window. Not all these options work on Internet Explorer 5. Netscape users shouldnt have any problems.

Help for Presenters

Thank you for offering your time and support to the WOW! Online Chat & Discussion Forums. Below is a set of instructions including how to access the chat. As a presenter we ask that you be on time to your nominated chat/discussion forum. Please be aware of any changes in Day Light Saving, depending on which State/Territory you are in. The Chats will run on Eastern Standard Time.

1. Accessing the Chat/Discussion Forum

To access the chat/forum you do not need any additional software. You only need a computer with internet access.

To begin go to http://www.mtc.une.edu.au/wow Click on the link that reads: Join today's chat/discussion forum on: "the nominated chat/discussion".

For the Chat Sessions:

A page will appear which asks you to enter a Nickname, Username, email address and then to press connect. Your Nickname is what will appear before each message you write.  Once this is done, the chat box will appear with a welcome to you in it.  To chat, type in your message in the space below the screen and press enter. You will see your message appear almost immediately in the box. It is a good idea to begin with a general "hello, I'm YourName", and then maybe ask some questions about the papers etc.

Tip: When you wish to respond to a specific posting, it is a good idea to address you message to that person. For example, if a message "<jo> I work in IT" appears, you could respond by typing in "Jo- where do you work?" which will appear in the box as "<yourname> Jo-where do you work?". The responding message from her will appear as "<jo> Yourname- I work with BigComputer" ...etc

To exit the Chat go to the Toolbar at the top of the chat box, click on File, and click on Quit IRC.

You will also notice that the toolbar has other options for you, such as increasing font size.

For the Discussion Forums:

A page will come up that asks you to fill in a form. This is similar to sending an email. Include your name, your email address, message heading and write your message.
A preview page will then appear, asking whether you are happy to send this message. If you are press save message.
You message will then be listed with your name and message heading on the message board (the first page you come to titled "Welcome to the Threaded Discussion")
To access your message or any other message that has been posted click on the message heading. At the bottom of the message, once it appears, you will see a "follow up" option. This is where you can respond to the message you have just viewed. In this way, discussion continues.
There is no formal need to exit, you just go to a different web page.

2. About your Papers

Your papers will already be on the site, linked to your name. It will be presumed that others will have read these, and may wish to ask you questions about it or comment on it.

If you are participating in a chat, we ask that you stay online for some time after you "present" to answer questions.

If you are participating in the forum, you are not required to stay online all the time, but we ask that you check the message board and make comments, answer queries where applicable from time to time.

3. Protocol

It is understood that participators in the Chat/Discussion Forum will not harass other participants, or engage in offensive behaviour towards others. The National Women's Justice Coalition (NWJC) has the option to remove someone from the chat, or a posting from the forums, if that person or posting is harassing or offensive.
